Filling the voids, Social housing, Milan 2009
This project deals with a few remaining urban voids in historic city center of Milan, Italy. As a provocation of bringing lost population to the city center, this project aims to open up stage for the further debate of utilizing such urban voids in dense fabric for public usage.
The idea for us was to attempt to bring in a new innovation in terms of building material and technology, giving a new character to social housing yet maintaining the continuity of the existing built form of Milan.
Design
The building has modest space planning which respects the minimum areas of social housing and service area. It also has commercial space in ground floor which is the typical to main streets of Milan. The continuity of surface combined with formal response to existing site features delivers a potent elegance. The main identity is the skin which renders a sophisticated aesthetic, consciously designed to control light in interior spaces. The commercial space, on the ground floor is enveloped by the dilapidated wall, a reminder of the past and giving an interesting combination of modern and old.
