Shimla
Named after the temple of Shyamala Devi, the capital of Himachal Pradesh has been claimed by many: the Nepalese rule, the British pomp and intrigues, and subsequently by the Indian nostalgia and middle class fancies. Amid the rolling hills, there are signs of days long gone, of barracks and residences that obviously had seen better days. The eclectic colonial buildings along the Mall Road are now joined by a hard to typecast new breed of buildings. Among these many-layered buildings and streets, old building plaques and signboards continue to echo the highs and lows of Shimla.
